As a Vermonter I'm getting a kick out of NBCs crew whining about the weather in Daytona

According to Google it's 54F in Daytona right now and they are bundled up in layers with gloves, hats, and hand warmers. At 54F I'm debating if I actually need anything more than a hoodie.

Thats Florida for you. I was down there once when the temperature fell into the 60s, and everyone was walking around in gloves and coats, and I was the weirdo northerner in shorts.

At 54 I definitely don't need more than a hoodie, and I probably won't zip it.

As a fellow Vermonter, I don’t get too smug about Florida - I’m not to keen on temps over 100, pythons, or hordes of marauding elderly people.

I’m here, I’ve experienced the wind chill of -40. It’s incredibly cold here. The 54 degrees only tell about 10% of the story. The wind chill off of the cold ass Atlantic, along with the vortex wind bowl that is Daytona International Speedway tells the other 90. Out of the wind it’s not cold at all, in the wind it’s absolutely awful.

It’s 54 with a wind chill off of the Atlantic. It’s 54, but I was less cold the other day working outside when it was 27.

As a Phoenician, I find it pretty ridiculous. They have to be sweating their asses off. I just ran to the grocery store and didn’t bother grabbing a jacket. It’s about the same temp here, but with no humidity.

While I haven’t experienced Daytona, I think I can relate to something similar in terms of it being far colder than the thermometer suggests.

Back in my Marine Corps days, I spent a surprisingly cold week on Gold beach in Southern California in July on Camp Pendelton. We bivouacked in a canyon literally on the beach. From sunset to midmorning everyday it was legitimately the entire company wearing a fleece, hat and light gloves despite air temperatures theoretically being in the high 50's/low 60's. In reality, the relentless damp cold wind comming off the pacific made it cold. We also bivouacked under the stars without tents, so you never got out of the damp or the wind . Add that to doing things like firewatch or comm watch overnight where you’re sitting or otherwise generally not doing anything or moving much at all for hours at a time and you start to actually get cold.

Going even just half a mile inland was a drastic difference in percived temperature just being in dry air and out of the onshore wind. Likewise, once the morning fog was b urned off and the sun came out mid-morning, it was the beautiful warm beach everyone imagines Southern California to be.

I suppose it’s possible we could’ve been a Marine recon company comprised entirely of wimps, but I’m guessing that wasn’t the case.

Super low temps are easy to brag about when the longest you’re outside is walking to your car. Being wet and outdoors for hours and hours on end, especially when you are stationary (ie sitting in the stands or comment booth), makes even mild temperatures seem incredibly cold.
